40,000 deaths: Crosses on Copacabana Beach

On June 11, 2020, members of the NGO Rio da Paz dug 100 symbolic graves on Copacabana beach, in protest at the way the Brazilian government has dealt with the pandemic in the country. The objective was to remember the more than 40 thousand people who died due to Covid-19 in Brazil. The action gained national attention when pro-government observers began digging up the crosses and a man passing in front of the installation was filmed inserting them again as he expressed his outrage at the lack of empathy for those who had lost family members.
