During the pandemic, social movements had to face new challenges to express their criticisms and complaints and present proposals for social transformation to society and public authorities. With restrictions on social gatherings and face-to-face meetings, movements have innovated new forms of protest and demonstration online, while continuing to organize in-person acts.
On this page, we present a selection of examples of campaigns and mobilizations aimed at denouncing government actions in the face of the pandemic (or lack thereof) and at galvanizing political and social support for alternative proposals to face the pandemic.
On this page we present events, mobilizations and actions aimed at preserving the memory and respect for the mourning of the families of people who are victims of Covid-19, as well as initiatives by different groups that seek justice and reparation for the victims and their families.
On this page we present actions, events, demonstrations, pressures and partnerships with social movements for civil society to be present in legislative debates in the face of the closing of Congress due to the pandemic.
In partnership with the research group NEPAC (Nucleus for Research in Participation, Social Movements and Collective Action), from Unicamp, public manifestos written by different sectors of civil society in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic were collected.
Joining forces and mobilizing social movements and the community contributed to consolidate campaign mechanisms in different ways to guarantee resources and ways to contribute to saving lives. Here we add actions that unite political acts and solidarity to help fight the pandemic.
At first, the pandemic led to a decrease in street protests. This did not, however, mean the end of the mobilization. Other forms of protest emerged or were intensified. Starting in May, street protests resumed in several countries and many linked the pandemic to issues such as racism and inequality.
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, debates have already existed regarding vaccines. The beginning of vaccination brought hope and several campaigns in favor of the vaccine spread across the country. However, opposing groups for various reasons also created actions. We bring campaigns for and against vaccination.
IN DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY AND LIFE
The campaign #BrasilpelaDemocracia #BrasilpelaVida brings together more than 70 organizations including entities, trade unions, social movements, pro-democracy articulations and non-governmental organizations.
