The social movements Frente Brasil Popular and Frente Povo sem Medo created this petition seeking to increase resources for healthcare by taxing fortunes. The idea is to pressure Congress to approve the regulation of the tax on large fortunes, as provided for in the Federal Constitution.
The authors emphasize that the coronavirus pandemic has deepened the political, economic, and social crisis in the country and state that the gravity of the moment demands every effort to save lives at risk, whether from illness or poverty.
Among the data presented by the groups, there is information indicating that only 8 out of every thousand taxpayers have a monthly income exceeding 80 minimum wages. Given this, they argue that implementing a fair and equitable tax system would allow for increased investment in the Public Health System (SUS) and expansion of social protection programs.
The topic is present in more than 10 bills currently being processed in Congress, and these bills already have over 300,000 supporting signatures, almost twice as many as the more than 160,000 signatures on the online petition.
